Tanssielokuva on rikas ilmaisutavoissaan. Näytös esittelee lajin moninaisuutta esteettisistä vedenalaisista tansseista animoituihin unikuviin.
Näytöksen aloittavassa ja päättävässä elokuvassa näemme taiteilijan työnsä äärellä. Siinä missä tanssianimaatio Little Dreams käsittelee taiteilijan unelmia, muistoja ja pelkojen voittamista, A Portrait of Marc Brew osoittaa kunniaa arvostetulle tanssitaiteilijalle. Elokuvat Solariloid ja Sarmad ammentavat teemansa luonnosta ja myyttisistä tarinoista uskonnollisin viittein. Solariloidin innoituksena ovat olleet skandinaavisen Runo-Eddan tekstit ja islannin luonto. Sarmadissa päähenkilö eksyy autiomaahan ja tapaa salaperäisen voimaa antavaan mystisen naisen. Solariloidin apokalyptinen tunnelma ennustaa maailmalopun tuhoa, Sarmad puolestaan lupaa arabiankielisen nimensäkin puolesta iänaikaista kiertokulkua. Step-elokuvassa tanssiteoksen monitasoinen kerrontatapa yhdistyy kiinnostavasti elokuvakerrontaan. Katsojan tulkittavaksi jää, kuvaako episodeista rakentuva elokuva yhden vai neljän eri-ikäisen naisen kohtaamisia ympäristönsä kanssa. Elokuva alkaa saksalaiskoreografi Pina Bauschin kuuluisalla lainalla: ”I loved to dance because I was scared to speak When I was moving, I could feel”. Tanssielokuva on tyypillisesti hyvin visuaalinen taidemuoto. Elokuvat FALL, Diving into your absence ja Noste antavat katsojille toisistaan poikkeavat visuaaliset kokemukset. FALL-elokuvan koreografisena tilana on koko valkokangas jaettuine elokuvaruutuineen. Diving into your absence ja Noste -elokuvien ympäristö on poikkeava. Dance film encompasses a rich variety of expression. This screening presents the diversity of dance on screen, from aesthetic underwater choreograpy to animated dreamscapes.
The opening and closing films of the screening both show an artist at their work. The dance animation Little Dreams is about an artist's dreams, memories and the conquest of fears, while A Portrait of Marc Brew honors a distinguished dance artist. The films Solariloid and Sarmad build on natural and mythical themes as well as religious references. Solariloid is inspired by the Scandinavian Edda poetry epic and the nature of Iceland. In Sarmad, the main character gets lost in the desert and encounters a mystic woman who bestows a secret power. The apocalyptic vistas of Solariloid are a vision of the end of the world, while Sarmad – true to its Arabic title – looks towards an eternal cycle of life. In the film Step, a multilayered story combines with cinematic narrative in an interesting way. The viewer is left to interpret whether the film is about one or four women of different ages, going through various encounters in their environment. The film begins with a famous quote from German choreographer Pina Bausch: ”I loved to dance because I was scared to speak. When I was moving, I could feel”. Typically, dance film is a highly visual art form. The films FALL, Diving into your absence and Noste each provide a different visual experience. In FALL, the entire cinema screen, with its subdivided frames, becomes the choreographic space. Diving into your absence and Noste share an unusual approach to location, with the former painting a series of poetic images in a salt vat, and the latter exploring the zero gravity of the underwater world.
