With the EU funded DDD60 project, the German technology company Spin Digital is developing a new improved high definition compression format to enable smooth and high quality screenings of 360°VR films at festivals. Loikka is screening compressed films on R Beta platform used for testing to enable high quality 360° images.
Mystical stories about Finnish accordion collected by the accordion virtuoso and composer Anne-Mari Kivimäki; dazzling and wicked performances of Reetta-Kaisa Iles – an eclectic mix of Finnish folk and contemporary dance traditions; fierce ethno-rock sounds of Kivimäki/Iles band "Puhti" inspired an award-winning filmmaker Alla Kovgan to dive into virtual reality. The result is Devil's Lungs, a surreal deadpan 3D VR 360º experience, challenging boundaries between traditional and contemporary, male and female, hellish and heavenly, ecstatic and everyday, celebrating power of women through Finnish music and dance.
Loops is an intimate encounter with the late contemporary dance legend and pioneer of contemporary dance, Merce Cunningham. The visualisation of Mark Downie and Paul Kaiser’s digital art work is based on Cunningham’s solo choreography ‘Loops’ which he performed since the 1970s and never passed on to another dancer. The soundscape consists of Cunningham’s diary notes of his trip to New York in 1937 read out loud and digitally recreated piano arrangement by the late John Cage. With Cunningham’s choreography and Cage’s music Loops reaches out into the world of contemporary dance and music, and together they create a beautiful and delicate atmosphere; it is almost as if Merce Cunningham is standing next to you telling stories about his life years past before his role as the pioneer in the canon of contemporary dance.
Wombsong is an abstract 360° virtual reality piece in which a pregnant dancer leads the viewer into an imaginary world inside the womb. It's an exploration of the nature of expecting life to be born and the pregnant body's relationship toward the harmony inside the womb. The soundscape is created from the authentic sounds recorded through the dancer's pregnant belly and dancer's voice as well as the voice of a baby. This takes us to experiencing a start of a new life from a whole new perspective. Wombsong plays with the simulation of the fetus' experience inside a dancing body and creates different emotional and virtual non existing spaces which cannot be placed. Baby's first contact with a tightly embracing, big and mysterious being is as much a mystery as the mother's relationship to the growing life inside.
